Mitzvot for Rosh Hashanah

Yamim Noraim is a time when we are reminded that what we do matters - to G-d (or in a universal sense), to our community, and to our family. The rituals and liturgy of Elul and spanning the 10 day expanse of time between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are meant to open up a space within which genuine self-transformation (teshuvah) becomes possible. Intense self-examination is the primary modality of this work, but no less important is the action that accompanies or results from a careful accounting of the self - be it in our open request to our friends and loved ones for forgiveness for our everyday or major failures to acknowledge them in their separateness from us; in our acts of tzedakah; or in our work towards Tikkun Olam.

For those seeking to be of service during
Yom Hazikaron and Yom Kippur, the LJCC invites you to take part in:
  • The Lawrence Interdenominational Nutritional Kitchen (LINK) on Thursday, September 25. LINK is a vital safety net for so many members of the Lawrence community. Do a mitzvah during these days of awe - contribute a casserole, side dish, dessert; make a financial contribution; or serve lunch from 11:30 to 2pm
  • Reverse Tashlich on Sunday, September 28 at 10am in Burcham Park. Turn symbolism into action by actively helping to clean the banks and waters of the KAW, impacting waters as distant as the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Our 2025 Annual Matching Campaign! At the LJCC, nearly half of our operating income comes from donations over and above member dues. Your tzedakah this holiday season supports the LJCC in its mission to be an inclusive and thriving center for Jewish life in Lawrence, KS, ensuring that we can continue to welcome all who wish to worship with us regardless of their ability to pay.
