Committees
Committees
As a lay-led community, there is always work to be done -from caring for the B'nai Israel Cemetery to organizing the High Holidays. Whether you are a musician, a baker, an accountant, a gardener, or an educator, your unique skills are valuable. The LJCC is a collective endeavor, its shape and vitality determined by those who choose to be involved.
No matter who you are we would love to work in partnership with you to keep our Jewish community active and fulfilled. Email us at lawrencejcc@gmail.com or call us at 785-841-7636 to find out how to get involved.
Ritual Committee
The ritual committee is at the heart of the LJCC, planning services, holidays, lifecycle events, and other religious observances. The committee meets monthly to make sure things run smoothly and that the community has lay leaders for all of its ritual needs.
Family programming Committee
Family Programming Committee Working closely alongside the religious school director, the Family Programming Committee (FPC) oversees education and youth and family programming from preschool to the post-B'mitzvah teen years. The FPC works to achieve the shared communal goal to integrate our youngest members (and their learning) into the broader life of the congregation.
blintz Brunch committee
The Blintz Brunch is one of our favorite (and most fabled) events - and our main annual fundraiser. Yearly, the Sunday before election day, the LJCC opens its doors to the entire Lawrence community. All are welcome to join, especially those with experience in marketing, organization, and administration.
CEMETERY COMMITTEE
The cemetery committee oversees and manages the B'nai Israel Cemetery on behalf of the LJCC board. The B'nai Israel Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and the LJCC is honored to serve as its steward.
Tikkun olam
The LJCC currently pursues Tikkun Olam through its Mitzah of the Month program as well as participation in LET-US (Lawrence Ecology Teams United in Sustainability) and the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutritional Kitchen (L.INK). We always need volunteers for LINK. You can help by providing casseroles, side-dishes, fruit, and desserts or by volunteering to serve lunch or making a financial contribution. The LJCC invites new and existing members to join the Tikkun Olam committee and to inspire our community to pursue social justice through educational and humanitarian programs.
BLESSINGS"/CHESED COMMITTEE
We might lack for a rabbi, but we don’t have to lack for care of one another. This volunteer list is contacted when someone in our community is in need of a little extra care - a meal train; a friendly face or a ride to an appointment; some flowers; whatever it might be.

JanJanuary 30 , 2025Healthy aging, lifestyle medicine and plant-based nutrition (Hybrid)
Thursday, Jan 30th 7:00p to 8:30p
The novelist and poet Wendell Berry once commented that “people are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health, and are treated by the health industry, which pays no attention to food.” The new field of lifestyle medicine is changing that, getting back to the basics that are so important in maintaining health and well-being. Dr. Friedman, a board-certified geriatrician and lifestyle medicine physician, will discuss the pillars of lifestyle medicine – especially whole-food plant-based nutrition – and how they promote healthy aging. -

Motzei Shabbat, Feb 22nd 7:00p to 9:00p
I Do Not Want Your Sympathy: Shiva, Snacks, and the Art of Remembering - What is comfort? What do mourners need, and is memory really a blessing? Join us for an evening of art and discussion with local author-illustrator (and former pastry chef) Marilyn Naron. The LJCC will exhibit Marilyn’s recent art commissioned for the Kansas Book Festival, including the central piece “I Do Not Want Your Sympathy,” a triptych painted and collaged entirely from sympathy cards her family received after the death of her sister in 1996. Marilyn is currently at work on an illustrated memoir, “How to Draw a Sister,” and her talk will explore how food, sympathy, memory, and Jewish death rituals come together in that project.
