Fragments of Sinaiism: a conversation with Sam Brody & Ken Lassman

Sunday, July 27, 2025 2 Av 5785

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Tisha B'Av commemorates the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. It's easy, when reading Eicha (the Book of Lamentations), to sympathize with the tremendous suffering caused by these events. But what made this different than any suffering experienced by any people in war? What did we lose when we lost the Temple? What does Tisha B'av mean if you aren't really sure you anticipate the Temple's return - if you prefer Sinai to Zion? Community members Ken Lassman and Sam Brody will host a conversation on these topics and others, by way of reflections on Sam's recent pamphlet "Fragments of Sinaiism: Jewish Politics from the Other Mountain."

About Sam:

Samuel Hayim Brody is Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Kansas. He is the author of Martin Buber's Theopolitics and the co-editor, with Julie E. Cooper, of The King is in the Field: Essays in Modern Jewish Political Thought
