Sig & Loraine Lindenbaum

Lindenbaum Fund for Holocaust Education

Siegfried and Loraine Lindenbaum moved to Lawrence in 1971 with their three children, Jeff, Ann and Beth. Almost immediately upon their arrival, they visited the LJCC – at that time the Lawrence Jewish Community Center – and never looked back. While initially taken aback by the congregation’s informal structure, they soon became deeply involved with the community. Sig was an active lay leader, Loraine participated in the Blintz Brunch and other women’s group activities, and the children attended religious school.

Sig was a Holocaust survivor, having been rescued from Nazi Germany through the Kindertransport program. In the years prior to his death in 1993, Sig wrote about his experiences and spoke frequently with community groups and students. When he passed, the congregation received many donations in his memory and Loraine worked with a group of LJCC members to establish the Lindenbaum fund for Holocaust education. Since its inception, the fund has enabled the LJCC to host a number of distinguished speakers, providing important Holocaust programming to the Jewish and greater Lawrence community.
