Come celebrate Purim at the LJCC with a reading of the megillah, festive beverages, and tasty hamantaschen. Costumes strongly encouraged and contributions of Hamantaschen much appreciated!

Purim is, no doubt, a time for raucous celebration. But we can best appreciate this holiday when we attend to the substance behind the bacchanal. Just as the story of Esther encodes the pursuit of social justice as essential to Jewish identity, so too the wildness of Purim reminds us that social hierarchies and the injustices they create are not immutable facts. They are structures that it is up to us to dismantle. Thus, on Purim, we commemorate Esther’s heroism not only with drinking and unruly merriment, but also with acts of tzedakah.
